Nathan Bryan, Ph.D.
Dr. Bryan earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and his doctoral degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport where he was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research. He pursued his post-doctoral training as a Kirschstein Fellow at Boston University School of Medicine in the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute. After a two year post-doctoral fellowship, in 2006 Dr. Bryan was recruited to join faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston by Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., 1998 Nobel Laureate in Medicine or Physiology. During his tenure as faculty and independent investigator at UT, his research focused on drug discovery through screening natural product libraries for active compounds. His nine years at UT led to several discoveries which have resulted in over a dozen issued US and international patents and many more pending worldwide.
Specifically, Dr. Bryan was the first to describe nitrite and nitrate as indispensable nutrients required for optimal cardiovascular health. He was the first to demonstrate and discover an endocrine function of nitric oxide via the formation of S-nitrosoglutathione and inorganic nitrite. Through the drug discovery program in natural product chemistry, Dr. Bryan discovered unique compositions of matter than can be used to safely and effectively generate and restore nitric oxide in humans. This technology is now validated in six published clinical trials. He is also a successful entrepreneur who has commercialized his nitric oxide technology through the formation of Human, to the Power of N, Inc (formerly Neogenis Labs) where he is a Founder and inventor. Dr. Bryan has been involved in nitric oxide research for the past 18 years and has made many seminal discoveries in the field. These discoveries and findings have transformed the development of safe and effective functional bioactive natural products in the treatment and prevention of human disease and may provide the basis for new preventive or therapeutic strategies in many chronic diseases. Dr. Bryan has published a number of highly cited papers and authored or edited 5 books. He is an international leader in molecular medicine and nitric oxide biochemistry.

Dr. Van D. Merkle DABCI, DCBCN, CCN, d
Dr. Merkle is an August 1982 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic. He is board certified in clinical nutrition and a board-certified clinical internist, who has practiced in Centerville, Ohio for over 35 years. He is the founder, developer and president of Science Based Nutrition (SBN) - a laboratory and nutrition, patented computer analysis system. He has been the host of the talk show Take 2 Healthcare on WHIO 95.7 FM every Saturday 11AM to noon for over 25 years.
Brief History of Dr. Merkle and how he became a chiropractor and got into lab testing and nutrition.
I’m Van David Merkle, I grew up on a rather large farm in north western Ohio with 3 brothers and a sister. We raised mostly corn, beans and wheat but also had hog farrowing with about 300 hogs at any one time. The nice thing about growing up on the farm was that I was highly motivated to do something else, other than farm. In undergrad, I played basketball and ran track…studied some and was planning on going to dental school. During a science honor’s event, I heard a chiropractor talk. I didn’t know anything about chiropractic but I thought: I’ll delay dental school for a semester and check out a chiropractic college. I decided on Logan Chiropractic College.
In undergraduate, playing sports, I had a chronic pain that was called a ‘bruised metatarsal’. The athletic trainer ‘knew everything’ about it and the only therapy was ice and taping but it always hurt and always affected my performance, even though I still set the school record in the 800 meters. I played on the Logan basketball team and one of the upper classmen saw me play and asked what was wrong with my foot. I told him about the bruised metatarsal. He took me to one of the instructors that specialized in extremities and after a brief examination, he adjusted my foot and the pain was immediately gone…GONE…just like that. Wow, I was amazed and really annoyed at the ignorant and arrogant athletic trainer. I knew that I had made the best decision to be a chiropractor.
After graduation from Logan in 1981, I was a typical DC- PI, WC, Insurance etc, good, successful and quite profitable after just a couple of years.
A couple of years into practice, a patient asked if I could help his 12 year old daughter that had Lupus and was failing fast, lot of drugs, doing kidney and liver biopsies. Nothing was working. I had dabbled in labs and nutrition, so I did what I knew and amazingly, I knew enough that her Lupus went into complete remission and has been in remission for 35 years, married with 3 children. Yes, that got me going. Then a couple years after that, my nephew was diagnosed with an adenoma in the brain. It is a long story but the best outcome with any medical treatment for the tumor was that he would be totally disabled, confined to a wheel chair the rest of his life, assuming he survived the medical treatment. I asked my brother to give me 3 months to see what I could do to help my nephew. I studied and developed a program and my nephew’s brain tumor shrank on PET scan by 50% in 3 months. The tumor is now gone, he is 42 yr/s old, no impairment, he is marred with 4 children. This would not have happened if his uncle Van, (me), hadn’t been willing to take a great risk and take responsibility to at least try to help. Yes, that got me highly motivated and many other similar cases, even today have given me great confidence and I am not intimated by any other doctor. I know of no other DC’s or other doctors that have so many objective cases of taking care of the worst of the worst, genetic, end stage diseases and conditions with the success that I often have.
I hope to show that any DC can do what I do. There are hundreds of doctors using the tools that I developed and getting similar results. You don’t need a DCBCN, DABCI or CCN, though I do and they are good. A DC is enough. You do have to have a system, know what and how to test, analyzing the test results properly with the right tools and provide a specific comprehensive report. I’ve been doing this type of work for over 30 years, taught at the ACA and many state conventions and other national and international venues. The highlight of my career, so far, was being the Key Note speaker at the Integrative Oncology International conference in Seoul Korea on April 19, 2019.
What I really want doctors to realize is that most or many conditions, even serious diseases often have simple, safe, natural and inexpensive solutions and that the improvements will usually be seen in 2 weeks but maybe 2 months if it is going to work.
In just a few hours, I’ll train you on what to test first, I call it foundational testing and I’ll show how easy it will be to determine what additional testing needs to be done. You will also get my best consultation tips for better compliance and how to read and analyze lab tests and make recommendations. I’ll also provide guidelines for retesting and patient management. BTW, my practice is 100% cash and are on track to do nearly $1,900,000 this year with 2 DC associates. People will pay for what they see is of value.
Doing advanced nutrition using lab testing can be really easy to do, once you get through the initial training and do a few cases. It just gets easier and better the more you do. This work will elevate you beyond what chiropractors do and set you above the rest with objective testing that is immediately accepted at face value. Blood work is the gold standard.
BJ Palmer did blood work, had a lab in his clinic. He was a true pioneer and I believe he would be doing the work that I teach if he were alive today. DC’s need to expand their vision of who they are and one of my favorite quotes from Palmer: “There is nothing I wouldn’t do to ease human suffering”. We live in a much different world from 100 years ago and all patients today need far more than just an adjustment. DC’s can fill that void and become the health authorities in their communities and right now I believe DC’s are the best answer if they are willing to do a little work and not be afraid to help their patients more.
If you have not heard me lecture, I know that you will be intrigued by my many stories of patients with objective results that show we have truly helped our patients with many serious and life threatening conditions.
I encourage you to come to this lecture and at least see what is possible. Maybe you too, will catch the vision and be the doctor your community needs now.
If you haven’t attended an SBN lecture in a while, there is new material, new marketing, new cases, many more features with the SBN system to make it all easier for the patient and SBN member. PLUS: there are some large projects we are working on that will likely have a very large impact for SBN members when they get fully developed.
We are proud to work with Fetterman lectures, and you will get the same great lecturer (me) and great material and training. Many doctors over the years have said it is the best lecture they have ever attended. Come and check us out.

Having a lifelong interest in sports and athletics, Dr. Morgan pursued the advanced post graduate Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician designation through National College of Chiropractic, completing the 3 year Sports Diplomate programin 1993. Dr. Morgan has served on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Chiropractic Society was chairman of the MCS Sports Committee. In the early 1990s he served as event chiropractor for the Professional Bowlers Association, the Internation Jet Ski Association, inline skating events, rodeo and bicycling races in Michigan.
A former motorcycle racer and mechanic, Dr. Morgan followed his passion, and in 1994 began working with the American Motorcycle Association Grand National Flat Track racing series. In the ensuing years, Dr.Dale has served at over 120 national races around the country, ranging from Del Mar, California, to Daytona Beach, Florida. Frequently, Dr Morgan is the only physician at these events and is called on to evalulate and treat serious injuries from broken bones to concussions in addition to the usual racing assortment of sprains, strains and bruises.
Dr. Morgan also served as Team Chiropractor for the Detroit Vipers Hockey team of the International Hockey League from 1995 to 2002. In this capacity, Dr. Morgan worked directly with the team surgeons, doctors and trainers. Keeping a chiropractic adjusting table in the trainer's room at the Palace of Auburn Hills arena, Dr. Morgan was often called on to treat the players before, between periods and after games. A number of former players continue to see Dr. Dale for regular chiropractic care.
As a sports chiropractor, Dr. Dale tends to view all patients as athletes. At least in the context that they're seeking his care and counsel to either perform better or to regain something that they've lost. This might be someone who wants to perform at his or her optimum. To be able to run faster, jump higher or perhaps in the case of a motorcyclist, to be able ride harder and longer. Or, maybe that patient is just hoping to be able to bend over to tie their shoes without pain. Regardless of the case or condition, we always offer the patient all available options to return to their full potential as quickly as possible.
